> When speaking about biodiversity we refer to the variation of life forms within a given ecosystem, it is the wealth of life on earth and its balance. Human activity has great consequences on nature and is speeding up the loss of biodiversity at an alarming rate.  As a result, we find destruction of ecosystems caused by water contamination and air pollution, and a clearing of the planet´s natural resources through deforestation.  In some cases, mountains have been moved in order to extract the earth resources.

This environmental change, which has been occurring over past centuries, is dangerously accelerating the process of living creature extinction.  In fact, it is known that only 1% of species that once lived on earth survive.

We hold the key to the sustainability of the planet in our hands – through the way we lead our lives and run our homes.  If we continue to maintain a high life style based on consumerism and extravagance, we stand a chance that one day, the richness of life may come to an end, and with that end…maybe even our own.

On December 19th 1994 the general assembly proclaimed the 22nd of May as “International Day of Biological Diversity”.

“…let´s renew our commitment to promote a greater awareness world-wide of the value of biological diversity and to do all that is possible to conserve the valuable systems that are life sources.”

Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary General, 2004.
