Paul Carr was born in Cornwall, England in 1961 and has worked as a symphonic composer and abstract artist.  He came to live in Mallorca in 2004 and in April will present his first ever solo show of new abstract paintings.

This collection of paintings demonstrates his love of music in its many forms and some of the works are directly related to music from the American jazz pianist, Keith Jarrett, through to the English composer Malcolm Arnold and the German Hans Werner Henze whose Violin Concertos and Symphonies he has only recently discovered but whose abstract leanings has founds an inspiration when putting paint on canvas.

As a composer he has always been influenced by English and American music from the 20th century and the same can be said of his painting. He loves the abstract artists from St. Ives and Newlyn schools who settled in Cornwall during the 1940’s and is very much drawn to the works of the American Moderns, from Jackson Pollock through to Joan Mitchell.

For him the paintings in his next exhibition represent a solidifying of styles and techniques that he has been using since coming to live in Mallorca. The paintings were mostly painted outside of his finca in Capdepera, so the weather has played an important part.
Also, as they were all painted in the months from September 2006 through to March 2007, the brightness, glorious colours and the cleaness of the Majorcan air have also served as inspiration.

He can’t say what it is in abstract art that inspires him, but he knows the emotional power of colour and beauty found in abstraction plays an important part. It is his hope that his next exhibition will give as much pleasure to those who view it, as it has given to him in its creation.
See ‘Art Walk’ for exhibition details.
